Atkins for Life: The Complete Controlled Carb Program for Permanent Weight Loss and Good Health

Author: Robert C Atkins

Millions of followers already know that the Atkins Diet really works... and new, important studies from leading universities agree. Where, in the past, the Atkins Diet has been the center of medical controversy, it has now been medically proven that the Atkins way is not only delicious, it's a safe and effective plan for shedding pounds for good. Followers are hungry for more information on how to stay on Atkins -- and that's what this book delivers, with:

  • 200 menu plans and 125 recipes
  • Special holiday meals and fantastic ethnic cuisines
  • Before-and-after photos and inspiring success stories -- with time-tested tips from those who've been there and won their battle with weight
  • Self-tests to help readers meet and stay with their goals

Publishers Weekly

Atkins, cardiologist and founder of the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine in New York City, has advocated his high protein/low carb diet regimen for some 30 years (Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution was published in 1972, and Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution in 1992). While fans of the butter-eggs-steak diet have long supported the Atkins program as a way of life, until this past year, the medical community has not warmly endorsed the plan. However, recent students show that the Atkins plan has enabled dieters to both lose and maintain their weight loss as well as reduce their cholesterol levels. This book, which can be used by people familiar with the Atkins plan as well as those who have not followed it, offers detailed questionnaires designed to help readers understand the preferred food choices. Particularly helpful are the charts of "eat regularly," "eat in moderation" and "eat sparingly." Some of the inclusions may surprise readers but Atkins offers explanations of which foods fall into the "higher carb" categories (potatoes, bananas, rice cakes) and therefore must be limited. First-person success stories are sprinkled throughout the book. The second half of the book includes a month's worth of meal plans, holiday menus, and 125 recipes for a variety of foods, including jerk shrimp, potato salad, brown rice pilaf, zucchini latkes, rhubarb applesauce and chocolate souffle. While this diet won't work for everyone, especially vegetarians, this guide is a comprehensive overview for dieters who are ready to embrace the Atkins philosophy. (Mar.) Forecast: With national print and broadcast advertising along with a TV/radio satellite tour, this book is sure to hit bestseller lists and re-ignite discussion over the continued increase in the number of overweight Americans and the safety and effectiveness of different diets. Alcoholism in America or The House on Beartown Road

Alcoholism in America: From Reconstruction to Prohibition

Author: Sarah W Tracy

Despite the lack of medical consensus regarding alcoholism as a disease, many people readily accept the concept of addiction as a clinical as well as a social disorder. An alcoholic is a victim of social circumstance and genetic destiny. Although one might imagine that this dual approach is a reflection of today's enlightened and sympathetic society, historian Sarah Tracy discovers that efforts to medicalize alcoholism are anything but new.

Alcoholism in America tells the story of physicians, politicians, court officials, and families struggling to address the danger of excessive alcohol consumption at the turn of the century. Beginning with the formation of the American Association for the Cure of Inebriates in 1870 and concluding with the enactment of Prohibition in 1920, this study examines the effect of the disease concept on individual drinkers and their families and friends, as well as the ongoing battle between policymakers and the professional medical community for jurisdiction over alcohol problems. Tracy captures the complexity of the political, professional, and social negotiations that have characterized the alcoholism field both yesterday and today.

Tracy weaves American medical history, social history, and the sociology of knowledge into a narrative that probes the connections among reform movements, social welfare policy, the specialization of medicine, and the social construction of disease. Her insights will engage all those interested in America's historic and current battles with addiction.

The House on Beartown Road: A Memoir of Learning and Forgetting

Author: Elizabeth Cohen

In this beautiful book, Elizabeth Cohen gives us a true and moving portrait of the love and courage of a family.

Elizabeth, a member of the "sandwich generation"—people caught in the middle, simultaneously caring for their children and for their aging parents—is the mother of Ava and the daughter of Daddy, and responsible for both. Hers is the story of a woman's struggle to keep her family whole, to raise her child in a house of laughter and love, and to keep her father from hiding the house keys in his slippers.

In this story full of everyday triumphs, first steps, and elderly confusion, Ava, a baby, finds each new picture, each new word, each new song, something to learn greedily, joyfully. Daddy is a man in his twilight years for whom time moves slowly and lessons are not learned but quietly, frustratingly forgotten. Elizabeth, a suddenly single mother with a career and a mortgage and a hamper of laundry, finds her world spiraling out of control yet full of beauty. Faced with mounting disasters, she chooses to confront life head-on.

Written in wonderful prose and imbued with an unquenchable spirit, The House on Beartown Road takes us on a journey through the remarkable landscape that is family.

The New York Times

Instead of molding all this into 270 pages of scathing retribution or bitter self-pity, Cohen has written a frank, funny and unexploitative memoir. She is not shy about detailing her father's Alzheimer's, but she's equally intent on illuminating his dignity. Indeed, the disease's cruel habit of eating away at memory made her determined to understand better the man who now depends on her for his existence. And though she doesn't glamorize Alzheimer's, she's not blind to its occasional heartbreaking beauty. — Maggie Jones

The Washington Post

Cohen's perspective on this painful experience is clearsighted, and her choices were guided by love. Her memoir is a potent articulation of the ties between one generation and the next. — Jane Ciabattari

Publishers Weekly

In this moving yet unsentimental memoir, Cohen chronicles the year her aging father, Sanford, suffering from mid-to-late-stage Alzheimer's, came to live with her and her baby, Ava, in a New York State farmhouse. The three endure a cold winter, Ava's teething and the ravages of Alzheimer's. Sanford, a retired economics professor, retains his physical health while his mind deteriorates, a process Cohen-a Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin reporter-describes in detail and with compassion, even as he loses the ability to know her ("I am having something of a blackout. Perhaps you can remind me who you are?"). Ava learns to walk and talk while Sanford forgets how to climb stairs and struggles with his vocabulary (when he can't remember the word "water," he substitutes "the liquid substance from the spigot"). "Daddy walks around now this way, dropping pieces of language behind him, the baby following, picking them up." Naturally, life's difficult. Sanford misses his wife, who lives with Cohen's sister on the other side of the country; Cohen's husband abandons them early on and she struggles to find help from local social services. Even though "each day arches numerous times toward disaster," the trio survives, even thrives. Cohen takes pleasure in her daughter, outings in parks, friends' and neighbors' generosity and the "memory project"-her attempt to catalogue her father's stories from his childhood, war years in the Pacific and teaching career. With splashes of humor and occasional-and understandable-self-pity, Cohen's fluid prose lifts her forceful story to a higher level, making it a tribute to her father and her family. (Apr.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Cohen suddenly finds herself part of the "sandwich generation"-adults caring for their aging parents while simultaneously rearing their own children. Her situation is even more complicated: as an older mother, her own child is only nine months old at the time her father, diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, comes to live with her family and shortly after that her husband leaves. Cohen is a journalist in the nearby town, but the old farmhouse way out in the country, on Beartown Road, suddenly becomes more of a liability than a luxury. The author crafts a workable albeit chaotic environment out of the growing vocabulary and motor skills of her daughter, Ava, and the faltering neurological network and failing memory that is replacing the economics professor she calls Dad. What should be a terribly sad story becomes a testament to the power of familial love and responsibility. The many tragedies of Alzheimer's are offset by Cohen's indomitable spirit and a few triumphs along the way, all related in her eloquent prose. Bernadette Dunne is masterful at moving among Elizabeth, Ava, and Sanford Cohen; her reading elevates this memoir to a superlative listening experience. Highly recommended for all public libraries.-Gloria Maxwell, Penn Valley Community Coll., Kansas City, MO Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Lyrical, gripping tale of the year Cohen's life went to hell. One minute she was living an idyll, lazing through her days as a rural-upstate New York reporter and nights in a secluded farmhouse with a loving husband and infant daughter; the next, her Alzheimer's-afflicted father had moved in, her husband had moved across the country to shack up with an 18-year-old, and winter buried the house in snow. Cohen and her youthful husband had been a Manhattan couple with an active social life. After the move to Beartown Road and Dad's appearance, her city sophistication was entirely irrelevant in the endless battle to keep her father and daughter fed, dry, and safe, to get through the winter without freezing to death (apparently a surprisingly easy thing to do in a civilized North American town), neglecting her family, or losing her job. Cohen takes what could be a self-indulgent sob story and turns it into the stuff of high adventure. When she lies to her father about the eldercare group he attends, telling him he is the group's teacher, the reader prays the fiction will hold so that she can go to work secure in the knowledge that he won't accidentally burn the house down while smoking unattended. When neighbors plow her driveway after big snowfalls, we're swept with gratitude for the author's sake. Cohen frames the whole of her messy, absorbing year in the framework of how we learn and forget. As her daughter gains words, her father loses them. As her daughter acquires motor skills, her father stumbles. As she describes the waxing of her daughter's personality and the waning of her father's, the fact he cannot remember her name or learn her daughter's, Cohen manages never to resort tosentimentality. The adventure and peril of everyday living captured in language that's light, beautiful, and razor-sharp. Agent: David Black

Interesting book: InStyle or Demystifying Anorexia Nervosa

Preventing Eating Disorders among Pre-Teen Girls: A Step-by-Step Guide

Author: Beverly Neu Menassa

A must for parents, teachers and counselors, this book targets preadolescent girls aiming to engage them in educational activites that will empower them to avoid eating disorders. The author examines eating disorders from sociocultural and feminist perspectives showing how disorders are most often caused by overexposure to media messages, an unrealistic cultural fascination with thinness, by continuous anaylsis of our bodies and a disordered cultural view of food. Menassa then presents a 10-session guide to prevention that engages girls in activities to spur and empower their independent thinking and reasoning. For example, girls become watchdogs of the media and write to companies that present women in a negative light in their advertisements. The girls challenge ingrained beliefs and replace them with healthier ones.

Kim Carter - VOYA

Mental health counselor Menassa is concerned with fading media interest in eating disorders, something she attributes to the fact that "young women with anorexia do not look much different from our favorite actors and models, so the shock value has lost its shock." This book is her effort to preempt the "difficult, painstaking, and intense" treatment for eating disorders whose "result can lead to health, or if unsuccessful, death." Following a literature review on the etiology of eating disorders and a summary of risk factors, the book presents "Body Armor," a prevention program for young girls ages nine to twelve. Because "discussing behaviors of bulimia may inadvertently teach girls how to lose weight in unhealthy ways," the program focuses on concrete cognitions: "how to cope with stress, choose healthy food, cope with teasing, resist media messages, become a watchdog against media messages that portray women negatively." The program integrates aspects from several models, focusing on empowering young girls to "create themselves and change their environments" and features use of Internet activities in hopes that girls will continue to access the sites after the program concludes, aiming at long-term attitudinal and behavioral changes. The Body Armor program consists of ten ninety-minute sessions, each carefully detailed, including Focus, Objectives, Behavioral Outcomes, Activities, and Processing Questions. Although each session's plan is comprehensively presented, Menassa stresses the need for involving an expert, such as a school counselor. Guidelines are provided for computer-assisted interventions, parental involvement, selection of group members, training the co-facilitators (incase parents are chosen for this role), and evaluation methods. A section on ethical and multicultural issues examines ethical concerns but does not actually address potential multicultural issues. This last criticism aside, the book offers a useful framework for a targeted prevention program. Many activities in the Body Armor program parallel therapy activities described in Natalie Friend's novel Perfect (Milkweed Editions, 2004; see VOYA review in this issue), in which thirteen-year-old Isabelle must attend "Eating Disorder and Body Image Therapy Group." Although the book might seem to be a natural companion to the prevention program, using it as such would run the aforementioned risk of inadvertently teaching girls how to lose weight in unhealthy ways while not sufficiently illustrating the harmful effects of bulimia. 2004, Praeger, 113p.; Index. This book attempts to document that culture." Introductory comments are followed by "Jack's Story," a prototype of addiction and recovery, as well as an alphabetic "addictionary" of AA jargon. In A Sponsorship Guide, which is set up in interview format, a group of 17 active, experienced sponsors, primarily from New York City and the West Coast, comment on issues such as same-sex sponsorship, the place of friendship in a sponsor/sponsee relationship, gay sponsorship, and qualities of a good sponsor. Each of the 12 steps is discussed, as well as various methods for working them with sponsees. Readers are assured that there are many ways to be an effective sponsor and that no one path to success exists. Included are a suggested reading list and step worksheets. Although the author remains anonymous, she reveals that she is a Los Angeles screenwriter and director.Catherine T. Charvat, John Marshall Lib., Alexandria, Va.

Fitness Unleashed!: A Dog and Owner's Guide to Losing Weight and Gaining Health Together

Author: Marty Becker

Got a canine couch potato? In just a few weeks, man's best friend can become man's best exercise buddy. Here's how!

Like their owners, more than half of American dogs are overweight. Research shows that trim pets live up to two years longer than overweight ones-making for a more healthy, vibrant life for your dog.

In a groundbreaking study, top obesity expert Dr. Robert Kushner found that exercising with your dog not only benefits your furry friend, it also gives you more confidence and motivation to exercise, leading to more weight-loss success. Dr. Kushner and prominent veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker have teamed up to present a simple, comprehensive walking program-beginning with just three 15-minute walks per week-that is as good for you as it is for your dog!

From starting out on the right foot (or paw) to gradually increasing the duration of your walks, Fitness Unleashed! is an indispensible guide to fitness and fun for you and your dog.

Library Journal

As obesity becomes more prevalent in humans, veterinarians like Becker are finding increasing obesity in canines. To address both problems, he and Kushner, a specialist in obesity issues, have joined forces in this guide to human and dog weight management. Through entertaining multiple-choice quizzes, readers can gauge their fitness as well as the fitness of their dogs; by tallying points, they can pick a plan of action to get themselves and their canine companions exercising. Interspersed among personal anecdotes are pieces of expert advice on everything from gear (good leashes and sneakers) to snacks (baby carrots for humans and canines) as well as success stories from people who embraced this healthier lifestyle for themselves and their pets. This work is suitable for any public library, regardless of the strength of its consumer health collection. The subject matter is primarily geared toward human health, but it would not be out of place in a pet/animal care collection.-Rachel M. American Medical Association Guide to Home Caregiving or Weigh Less Live Longer

American Medical Association Guide to Home Caregiving

Author: American Medical Association

At some time, most families will need to provide home care for an aging family member who is ill or disabled. While home caregiving provides many benefits, it takes careful planning, support, and patience.

The American Medical Association Guide to Home Caregiving provides the information you need to take the best possible care of an elderly, ill, or disabled person in a home setting. Written by experts from the American Medical Association, the book explains such essentials as how to:

  • Plan and arrange a room to adapt to a loved one’s needs
  • Give medications, maintain hygiene, monitor symptoms, deal with incontinence, provide emotional support, and relieve boredom
  • Choose a home healthcare provider
  • Pay for home healthcare, including Medicare and Medicaid, and long-term care insurance
  • Care for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or a terminal illness
  • Choose between alternative living arrangements such as assisted living facilities or nursing homes
  • Take care of yourself, the caregiver

With advice that touches both the physical and the emotional aspects of caregiving, this supportive, practical handbook will help make the experience as successful and rewarding as possible for you and your loved one.

For more than 150 years, the American Medical Association has been the leading group of medical experts in the nation and one of the most respected health-related organizations in the world. The AMA continues to work to advance the art and science of medicine and to be an advocate for patients and the voice of physicians in the United States.

Publishers Weekly

Many families have to care for an aging or ill relative at home, an undertaking that requires planning and support. In the American Medical Association Guide to Home Caregiving, Angela Perry, M.D., and the AMA draw upon the experience and advice of experts to address the emotional and practical aspects faced in home care. They cover home preparation, basic and special caregiving skills, choosing and paying a provider, long-term care, nursing home care, care for the caregiver and caring for someone who lives alone, someone with Alzheimer's disease and the terminally ill. Especially useful is a section on organizations and resources. This guide offers manageable alternatives to residential treatment. (Oct.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Abnormal Pap Smears or A Mind Apart

Abnormal Pap Smears: What Every Woman Needs to Know

Author: Lynda Rushing

More than 4 million women each year experience abnormal Pap smears. This comprehensive guide discusses the relationship of cervical cancer to infection by the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV) and underscores how crucial Pap smears are for cervical cancer prevention. The authors cover the meaning of different Pap smear diagnoses, ranging from atypical to full-blown cervical cancer, while simple and clear line drawings illustrate pertinent female anatomy and normal-to-abnormal cell changes.

Vital to the book are interspersed personal interviews, which provide firsthand information on women's feelings about their abnormal Pap smears as well as their experiences with cervical disease. These personal vignettes offer insights into the social and emotional effects that often result from an abnormal Pap smear. Since suboptimal tests can produce misleading results, tips are provided to help women improve their chances of receiving the most accurate Pap smear.

New to this revised edition is the most current information on cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer and their treatments. It details the latest developments in HPV testing, as well as the new liquid-based Pap test. Last, the future of Pap smears and cervical cancer prevention is explored, with special emphasis on the recently approved HPV vaccines.

The first edition was chosen by Nurse Practitioner and Library Journal as one of the best consumer health books available. Now fully updated, this clearly written, very approachable guide fills a vital women's health need.

Reviewer: Marilee M. Means, B.S., M.A., Ph.D. , SCT (ASCP) (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This book attempts to explain the causes of cervical neoplasia, the treatment procedures used, and the terminology that a woman might encounter when being evaluated for cervical neoplasia after an abnormal Pap smear result.
Purpose: The authors express a desire to help women understand the significance of an abnormal Pap smear result as well as the role HPV has in the development of cervical cancer and its precursors. The book fulfills these objectives quite well.
Audience: The authors, both women cytopathologists with years of experience, have written an exceptionally clear and easy to use book for the lay audience. Patients often become quite upset when learning of an abnormal Pap result. This book is not only medically accurate and up-to-date, but also provides a much needed resource for patients.
Features: The authors begin with an enviably clear explanation of female anatomy, normal and abnormal histology of the female genital tract, and cytology and its role in evaluating Pap smears. Simple, easy to understand diagrams show the various stages of cervical disease. The authors discuss the relationship of cervical neoplasia to HPV, and how women can deal with the treatment needed to combat cervical disease. They share personal stories of women affected by the disease and offer advice in getting the best possible results from the test. There is a list of frequently asked questions as well as two appendixes listing both questions for one's doctor and additional resources. A glossary of medical terms is a most helpful feature.
Assessment: This well-written, easily understandable book for a lay audience is medically accurate and, most of all, a source of information and comfort for any woman going through the pain, anxiety, and uncertainty of diagnosis and treatment for cervical disease. At a time when the death rate from this preventable cancer is much higher than what is optimally possible, this book fills a gap in the public's understanding that can help women combat this quite personal and distressing disease.

Library Journal

Millions of women experience abnormal Pap smears each year, but how many of these patients know what the test screens for, what they can do to ensure optimal results, how laboratory errors can affect their results, what various diagnoses mean, and what to expect in follow-up and treatment procedures? Rushing, medical director of cytology and gynecologic pathology at Pathology Services, Inc., and Joste, a medical doctor and associate professor of pathology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, cover these topics and more. They also consider the link between cervical cancer and human papillomaviruses, new Pap smear technologies, suggestions on how to deal with a cervical cancer diagnosis, cervical cancer prevention, personal stories from women who have experienced abnormal Pap smears, and a Pap smear FAQ. Selected chapter references, a glossary, and a very brief appendix featuring general references, web sites, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers complete the book. The authors do an excellent job of explaining concepts, procedures, and test results, but the frequent, albeit necessary, use of medical terminology and acronyms may make some readers' heads spin. Still, this book fills a void in women's consumer health literature. Recommended for public libraries and other libraries with consumer health collections. (Index not seen.) Samantha J. A Mind Apart: Understanding Children with Autism and Asperger Syndrome

Author: Peter Szatmari

"Dr. Szatmari shares the stories of over a dozen children and families with whom he has worked. He reveals that people with autism and AS live in a world without metaphors; a visual landscape, built of images, not language. It's a place where friendly small talk may sound like a foreign tongue, where tree branches are more intriguing than people, where hairbrush bristles can feel like nails on the scalp or a hug like the clamp of a vise. Drawing on decades of influential research and clinical experience, Dr. Szatmari combines "big picture" information - the nuances of diagnosis, what is known about possible causes, and what the future holds for children with these disorders - with finely wrought observations that let you see the world through your child's eyes." Of crucial importance, Dr. Szatmari also illustrates ways parents can "break through" to help kids start to navigate the wider world. An intense interest in the patterns on wasp wings may be mystifying, but such visual perceptiveness also can be channeled into artwork of math. A child fixated on death may be less afraid of loss than of change in general - a common form of anxiety that parents can help soothe. Hating to be touched doesn't mean your child doesn't feel affection, but that he is physically hypersensitive - and you can find other ways to encourage closeness and offer comfort.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Gary P. Dupuy, M.D., Doctor of Pharmacy (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This is a book about understanding the basis and nuances of symptoms in children afflicted with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). It is a unique and well-written book that uses real life vignettes to describe and review the characteristic symptoms of autism and the social consequences and impact of these symptoms on family members and others.
Purpose: The purpose is to improve the understanding of peculiar behaviors and thought patterns of children with ASD so that others, including family members, loved ones, and healthcare providers, may have a better perception and approach to dealing with these children. Hopefully, this understanding will lead to a better outcome in the future and improved quality of life for all involved. The unique approach of this book and the high-quality presentation of the information meet this goal.
Audience: The target audience includes anyone who interacts with someone with autism spectrum disorders on a routine basis, including family members, loved ones, friends, or healthcare providers. It will also be useful for those who desire to improve their understanding of these conditions and the afflicted person's outcome. This book is written in a format that is easy to follow and understand for medical or nonmedical readers.
Features: The author, a child psychiatrist specializing in autism and Asperger syndrome, presents vignettes that are entitled with a patient's first name and subtitled with a peculiar characteristic specific to that person. On the surface, this may not sound very scientific, but this format is very effective in formulating a true feel for the origin of this child's peculiar behaviors by offering a perception from the child's eyes of why the behaviors occur. The author also effectively interjects definitions and evidence-based information into the vignettes making them educational and scientific. This approach leads to improved understanding and empathy on the part of the reader and, ultimately, improved outcome and quality of life for the child and family members.
Assessment: This is a must read for anyone involved in the life of a child with autism spectrum disorders. Its unique presentation offers unparalleled insight into the origin of the atypical behaviors of children with this affliction by entering their world, or "foreign country," as the author describes it, through their eyes so that these atypical behaviors are less confusing and disruptive to others. This, in turn, should lead to a more respectful and effective approach to dealing with children with ASDs. The book is well written, is easy to follow and understand, and complements other resources on this topic. Its true contribution and usefulness, however, lies in its powerful presentation that leads to improved understanding and empathy in the reader.

What People Are Saying

Bryna Siegel
This unique and beautiful book takes you on a voyage to the unusual world of children and young adults with autism and AS. In close and personal detail, Dr. Szatmari describes the struggles of families to understand their children and to understand how they themselves are changed by their children. At the same time, the book brings to life key principles in our scientific understanding of these disorders. This brilliant work should be read by all parents and all clinicians involved in helping children with autism and AS.
PhD, author of Helping Children with Autism Learn

Patricia Howlin
We are far from having a complete understanding of autism and Asperger syndrome, but Dr. Peter Szatmari has done an unsurpassed job of shedding light on how children with these disorders feel and act. The cases he recounts in this book touch on many different aspects of autism, including both the numerous problems that children and their families face and the successes they can achieve. The book also bears witness to the courage and perseverance of parents who, all too frequently, must struggle to find appropriate support from clinicians and educators. An enlightening and welcome resource for many, many families, and one that should also be read by all professionals in the field.
PhD, Department of Psychology, St. George's Hospital Medical School, University of London, UK; coauthor of Teaching Children with Autism to Mind-Read

Tony Attwood
A landmark book in terms of style and content. Dr. Szatmari explores and describes the world as perceived by people with autism to explain their unusual behaviour and abilities, and discusses scientific theories and current therapies as well as causes and prognosis. The book is written objectively and engagingly, with literary skill and a sense of optimism that will be particularly appealing to parents. Dr. Szatmari clearly appreciates and admires the minds of children with autism, and is able to explain those minds to parents while providing realistic advice on remedial strategies.
PhD, author of Asperger Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals

Ami Klin
Dr. Szatmari's book embodies the best of that singular tradition in which science is matched against disability, one child at a time. A clinician, scientist, and keen observer of human nature, Dr. Szatmari weaves a deeply empathic and comprehensive account of autism and related disabilities. The stories he recounts illuminate the daily challenges and triumphs that children experience, while revealing his passion for discovery and healing. The result is extraordinarily rewarding reading for families affected by autism and for the professionals who serve them.

Natural Medicine First Aid Remedies or A Practical Approach to Strength Training

Natural Medicine First Aid Remedies: Self-Care Treatments for 100+ Common Conditions

Author: Stephanie Marohn

When faced with common health emergencies, many of us automatically turn to over-the-counter medications. But we have another option-easy-to-use, safe, inexpensive, and highly effective natural medicines.

Natural Medicine First Aid Remedies provides everything you need to know to treat a range of ailments and health concerns, including burns, muscle cramps, hot flashes, shock, sore throat, toothache-100 common health problems in all. (Next time you get a headache, try rubbing peppermint essential oil on your temples before you reach for the aspirin.)

Natural Medicine First Aid Remedies tells how to equip your medicine cabinet with the ten most essential natural remedies including arnica (for pain and stiffness), echinacea (for colds), tea tree oil (for skin infections), aloe vera gel (for burns), activated charcoal (for food poisoning), and more. It explains how homeopathy, herbs, diet, essential oils, flower essences, nutritional supplements, reflexology, and gem therapy can provide healing benefits for various conditions.

Written by health journalist Stephanie Marohn, Natural Medicine First Aid Remedies is based on medical research and draws upon protocols used by dozens of health care practitioners. Informative and unique, it is a reference that you will want to consult whenever faced with one of life's everyday medical emergencies, injuries, or discomforts.

Library Journal

Marohn's Natural Medicine First Aid Remedies covers many of the same situations as the ACEP manual but draws on complementary medicine therapies rather than traditional medicine. Marohn, a former senior editor of Alternative Medicine magazine, has included remedies from homeopathy, reflexology, essential oils, herbal medicine, and stone/crystal therapy, as well as nutritional supplements and food therapy. This is home care, not emergency first aid; no instructions are provided on setting broken bones or evaluating open head wounds. The author states clearly that this manual includes coverage of "ailments that can benefit from self-care as the first line of treatment," acknowledging that some health problems will need further treatment by a medical practitioner. The strength of this book is that it provides alternative medicine information to treat some common conditions. Covering the topic of first aid from different perspectives, these books are both recommended for consumer health collections. Why We Hurt: The Natural History of Pain

Author: Frank T Vertosick

As much as we detest pain, it remains curiously indispensable. Medical science still struggles to conquer pain, yet those who feel no pain at all live in great peril. Dr. Frank Vertosick, a practicing neurosurgeon, explores this paradox, using pain as a lens to give insight into how our bodies function.

C. S. Lewis called pain God's megaphone: it gets our attention and warns us of danger. Using stories of patients in pain, Dr. Vertosick explains how pain evolved and why it functions the way it does. Beginning with his own battle against severe migraines, he goes on to explain other common pain syndromes-back pain, angina, cancer pain, arthritis, childbirth, and carpal tunnel syndrome. A fine writer and empathic physician, Dr. Vertosick combines the scientific beauty of the bestselling How We Die with the superb storytelling of Oliver Sacks. He gives us a mixture of medicine, history, anthropology, drama, inspiration, and practical advice. For people in pain, as Dr. Vertosick explains so well, knowledge is often the first, and best, analgesic.

About the Author:

Frank T. Vertosick, Jr., M.D., is a neuro-surgeon and author of When the Air Hits Your Brain, a memoir of his surgical training. A former president of the Pennsylvania Neurosurgical Society and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

New York Times Book Review - Jerome Groopman

...a feat of literary alchemy. [Vertosick] transmutes the lugubrious subject of pain into a provocative and edifying treatise that tightly engages the reader.

Washington Post - Carole Horne

Vertosick brings commendable, accessible understanding to the knotty question of pain...

Newsday

Fascinating . . . Falls squarely in the territory of Oliver Sacks.

Chicago Tribune

[Vertosick] tells personal anecdotes about his own migraines and crafts stories of emergency room horrors with a deft sense of suspense and timing.

Publishers Weekly

This accessible and compassionate exploration of physical pain should be of great interest since, at one time or another, almost everyone has experienced severe or recurrent pain. As a neurosurgeon, Vertosick (When the Air Hits Your Brain) has treated patients with migraines, back problems, neuralgia, rheumatoid arthritis, angina and cancer. Drawing on case histories from his practice and on scientific research, he surveys the experience and the processes of pain, as well as the idea of it. He gives a brief, clearly stated history of painful conditions, explains how and why pain strikes and describes the various ways medical intervention can ease or eradicate pain. He also reflects on his wife's labor pains; details the history of anesthesia (a medical invention that he rates as "high among the greatest achievements of our age"); and tells a series of stories about how he and his patients have dealt with their pain. He recounts, for example, how he worked with Anne, a patient whose ruptured disc prevented her from walking on one of her legs. First he tried physical therapy, steroids and narcotic medications to alleviate her pain. Then, when all these treatments failed, he performed the back surgery that enabled her to recover. Combining personal narrative with scientific explanation, Vertosick, who describes himself as "a bit of a wimp" who dislikes seeing patients in pain, displays an enormous dedication to relieving suffering. Kirkus Reviews

Neurosurgeon Vertosick (When the Air Hits Your Brain, 1996) presents a clear and in-depth study of the nerve-racking nature of human pain. Vertosick does not progress chronologically through medical or evolutionary history, as the words "natural history" might suggest. Instead, he organizes his study in a much more engaging way, with thorough examinations of various types of pain that afflict patients of every class and age. The variety of these tribulations is astonishing: Vertosick devotes entire chapters to migraine, "phantom," and back pains, carpal tunnel syndrome, childbirth, and cancer pains. At its core, Vertosick's study is a series of case studies, each one presenting his explanation of the patient's ailment and portraying the steps he and other doctors took to alleviate the pain. These topics are sometimes quite personal to Vertosick, who once found himself in the "Shadowlands" of pain (suffering migraines for over a decade before learning to treat them himself). Vertosick's suffering may explain why he is such a sympathetic writer, giving due attention to emotion and science with each case study he presents. Whether recounting his wife's mid-labor abandonment of "natural" childbirth or investigating a milkman's mysterious arm pains, Vertosick tells each story with an eye for critical analysis and a heart that understands and shares in the patient's plight. He also takes note of religion, philosophy, and literature throughout, providing a holistic look at a topic that science alone cannot explain away. Vertosick's work can be useful to those who suffer from chronic pain, as well as to those who want tobetterunderstand the complexity of the body and the nature of human frailty.

HRT Solution: Optimizing Your Hormone Potential

Author: Marla Ahlgrimm

In the past hormone replacement therapy has relied on synthetic hormones or animal-derived hormone products that come only in standardized doses. While this therapy has worked for some women many others have found that it has no effect at all or worse, that it causes a host of unpleasant side effects. This should be no surprise, since every woman's hormonal profile is uniquely her own. The HRT Solution offers a new approach, therapy as natural and as individual as you are, using simple personalized hormone-level assessment and monitoring combined with customized doses of natural hormones that are identical to those your body makes. Finally, there is a better way to manage your health in menopause and beyond!

Get Well with the Hay Diet or Blood Sweat and 2nd Gear

Get Well with the Hay Diet: Food Combining and Good Health

Author: Jackie Habgood

The Hay diet, devised by an American surgeon named William Hay, involves separating carbohydrate meals from protein meals, enabling the body to digest food more easily. Using an easy-to-follow outline of food combining, complete with meal suggestions and food lists, this book will explain how to recover from digestive problems, low blood sugar levels, candida, allergies, food intolerances, and other illnesses by adapting everyday eating patterns to the Hay diet. With details of symptoms in each case, advice on diet and nutrition, and guidance on the Hay diet itself, the book clearly shows how full health can be restored in a remarkably short time. It also explains how weight can be controlled with the Hay diet. Get Well with the Hay Diet is an excellent resource for those who feel constantly under par, fatigued, or vaguely unwell and do not understand why. Jackie Habgood suffered health problems for 10 years before discovering the benefits of the Hay diet. She has since taught the subject at adult education centers and lectures widely on the subjects of diet and health awareness. She is the author of The Hay Diet Made Easy.

Hara or Mind Over Labor

Hara: The Vital Center of Man

Author: Karlfried Graf Durckheim

EASTERN PHILOSOPHY

“Hara is essential reading for all who inquire into the spiritual principles and practices that are fundamental to all wisdom traditions and natural healing professions.”
Don Stapleton, author of Self-Awakening Yoga

When we speak of an individual’s state, we are actually referring to something that transcends the duality of body and soul, something that reflects the entirety of a person’s being. Because each of us is a unity of body and soul, there is no psychic structure or inner tension that is not reflected outwardly in the form and order of the body. When we find the physical center of the body we also find the psychological center of the soul. According to Zen masters, by correcting posture and breathing to balance this center, one can cultivate inner tranquillity and balance: the state called Hara.

Karlfried Graf Dürckheim shows the Western world how to overcome the physical and spiritual decay of modern life by adopting the age-old techniques of Japanese Zen masters. By leaving behind the “chest out-belly in” posture and attitude of the West and adopting the belly-centered posture and attitude of Hara, individuals can live a calm, grounded, and more balanced life. Included in this classic text are vital life force practices and translations of the wisdom teachings of three Japanese Zen masters. This book also explores how the practice of Hara emphasizes empirical learning and the cultivation of self-knowledge through the perfection of arts such as painting and archery.

Karlfried Graf Dürckheim (1896-1988) spent eight years in Japanbefore World War II and was a professor at the University of Kiel until Hitler’s rise to power in 1933. In Japan he discovered Zen Buddhism in its various expressions and subsequently became a Western authority on the subject.

Mind Over Labor

Author: Carl Jones

The fear and pain most women expect from pregnancy can at last be overcome. Carl Jones, a certified childbirth educator, tells how using mental imagery can help you reduce the the pain of labor by controlloing the fear beforehand. His easy-to-follow, eight-step method, which teaches your mind to cooperate with your body, will help make your childbirth less stressful and more natural. Whether you plan to give birth at home, in a childbearing center, or in a hospital, Carl Jones's simple exercises will put you in touch with the best instrument of birth there is - yourself.

Publishers Weekly

``This book will show you how to create the kind of birth you want,'' writes Jones, author of After the Baby Is Born, etc. He compares childbirth to lovemaking in terms of the potential joy for the woman and claims that the key to a ``safe, happy birth'' is mental imagerythe art of creating vivid pictures in the mind to help the woman ``surrender'' to the ``pleasure'' of childbirth. Mental-imagery exercises include thinking of a ``Special Place,'' such as a favorite beach, or envisioning the child in the womb and asking ``what he or she needs.'' Jones stresses the importance of a mellow labor environment and subtly promotes the idea of delivery at home or in a childbearing center, but he fails to spell out the risks of a nonhospital delivery. His goal of a well-informed, positive-thinking pregnant couple is admirable, but his insistence that attitude can overcome virtually any problem is questionable. (February)

When Women Stop Hating Their Bodies or Living Well with Anxiety

When Women Stop Hating Their Bodies: Freeing Yourself from Food and Weight Obsession

Author: Jane R Hirschmann

"Will empower all women to stop believing that our bodies are the problems, dieting the solution."

—Harriet Lerner, Ph.D.

Author of The Dance of Anger

In this revolutionary new book, bestselling authors Carol Munter and Jane Hirschmann explore the myriad reasons why women cling to diets despite overwhelming evidence that diets don't work. In fact, diets turn us into compulsive eaters who are obsessed with food and weight.

Munter and Hirschmann call this syndrome "Bad Body Fever" and demonstrate how "bad body thoughts" are clues to our emotional lives. They explore the difficulties women encounter replacing dieting with demand feeding. And finally, they teach us how to think about our problems rather than eat about them—so that food can resume its proper place in our lives.

"Many women will find in these pages exactly what they need: determined, optimistic, and resourceful coaches, pausing at the right moments to acknowledge the difficulty of change, then passionately urging them to press on."

In a world that values excess, the pressure to succeed never ends. As a result of our fast-paced and high-stakes society, anxiety can take over our lives.

For approximately 20 million American adults a year, anxiety symptoms such as dizziness, stammering, heart palpitations, trembling, and shaking can be extremely debilitating. With a comprehensive resource section that contains relevant websites and e-mail addresses, audiocassettes and CDs for relaxation, and descriptions of related books, this book provides vital help for anyone experiencing anxiety.

Publishers Weekly

Clark (Living Well with Menopause) offers a solution-focused approach to living with anxiety. A certified holistic nurse practitioner with a master's in mental health, Clark, who admits to being among the 30 million Americans who suffer from anxiety, is careful not to impose her bias against conventional medicine on readers. What makes this book stand out isn't the clinically accurate overview of anxiety's causes and effects or the contrast of medical and holistic treatments, but its person-centered, strategic action plans. Information-packed chapters provide a thorough examination of nutrition (to identify missing anxiety-reducing nutrients), herbal supplements and the impact of nicotine, alcohol and chemicals, time-management skills, the potent antianxiety benefits of exercise and much more. Clark also discusses situations that may require therapy or counseling and provides a comprehensive checklist for finding a practitioner. Finally, readers are encouraged to create an Anxiety Success Plan (sample included). For millions of sufferers from generalized anxiety, panic disorder, phobias and other forms of anxiety who don't want medication, this book provides viable alternatives to traditional medicine. Death in Slow Motion: A Memoir of a Daughter, Her Mother, and the Beast Called Alzheimer's

Author: Eleanor Cooney

When her once-glamorous and witty novelist-mother got Alzheimer's, Eleanor Cooney moved her from her beloved Connecticut home to California in order to care for her. In tense, searing prose, punctuated with the blackest of humor, Cooney documents the slow erosion of her mother's mind, the powerful bond the two shared, and her own descent into drink and despair.

But the coping mechanism that finally serves this eloquent writer best is writing, the ability to bring to vivid life the memories her mother is losing. As her mother gropes in the gathering darkness for a grip on the world she once loved, succeeding only in conjuring sad fantasies of places and times with her late husband, Cooney revisits their true past. Death in Slow Motion becomes the mesmerizing story of Eleanor's actual childhood, straight out of the pages of John Cheever; the daring and vibrant mother she remembers; and a time that no longer exists for either of them.

Publishers Weekly

"Whoever said love was stronger than death was full of malarkey," comments Cooney, setting the forthright tone early in this honest account of taking care of a parent with Alzheimer's. In 1997, Cooney (The Court of the Lion: A Novel of the T'Ang Dynasty) and her companion, Mitch, both freelance writers, moved Cooney's 75-year-old mother, novelist Mary Durant, from her home in Connecticut to live near them in Northern California when it became clear that her mother's short-term memory was failing. A great admirer and loving daughter of her elegant, witty mother, Cooney suffered from terrible grief because she could not protect her mother from encroaching dementia. Durant's metamorphosis into a dependent, childlike hypochondriac occurred some years after the death of her husband. Cooney vividly describes the everyday physical and emotional stresses on her and Mitch, once her mother moved in with them, and highlights the lack of available resources for Alzheimer's patients who are not independently wealthy. Cooney and Mitch missed writing deadlines, began to drink heavily and nearly ended their relationship. When they could no longer manage her mother at home, Cooney placed her in several unpleasant assisted living residences, until Cooney managed to find her a reasonable place. A short story by Mary Durant is appended to this well-written, harrowing memoir. (Feb.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Library Journal

Soon after the unexpected death of her mother's third husband, novelist Cooney noticed subtle signs that her mother's memory was failing. Mary Durant (also a writer) fell prey to sweepstakes schemes, suffered from depression, and was becoming confused in familiar neighborhoods-common symptoms of Alzheimer's. Over their mother's violent protests, Cooney and her brother moved her from Connecticut to Cooney's California home. As Durant's memory deteriorated, Cooney found the "hip, cool" mother she knew and loved "insidiously replaced by an imposter." Unable to afford in-home assistance, Cooney turned to alcohol and antidepressants for relief. Finally, after 18 months of caregiving, she sought residential placement for her mother. Cooney's memoir is a vivid, honest account of losing a parent to Alzheimer's. It is also the story of her own growing up, a narrative that accentuates the loss of memories both mother and daughter suffered. As Cooney eloquently writes, "You can't remember the predementia person. The memories are stuck behind heavy soundproof plate glass." Although less medically focused than Charles Pierce's Hard To Forget, this is a wonderful addition to caregiving and Alzheimer's collections. Highly recommended. [Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 10/15/02.]-Karen McNally Bensing, Benjamin Rose Lib., Cleveland Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Novelist Cooney (Shangri-La, 1996, etc.) paints a harrowing portrait of the devastation Alzheimer's wreaks not just on the victim but on those closest to her.

"Hip, cool, brilliant, funny, sane," Mary Durant was transformed by the blight of Alzheimer's into a demented creature who nearly destroyed her daughter's life. When it became clear that Durant's mind was going, Cooney moved her mother from Connecticut to California to care for her. The initial plan, for Durant to live alone in a nearby apartment, proved impossible. Cooney then converted her garage into a residence for her mother, but this too became unworkable, and the long search began for an adequate, affordable live-in care facility. Durant's violent behavior caused her to be evicted from one home and judged unacceptable by others. Even with the help of Cooney's partner Mitch, who had once been a nursing-home inspector, finding the right place was a long and grueling process. As she chronicles Durant's increasing dementia and its devastating effects on her own life (she turned in anguish to Valium and vodka), Cooney weaves in glimpses of happier days. Durant was a respected writer--the inclusion of an unpublished short story in the appendix is an unexpected bonus--and young Eleanor took great pride in her glamorous mother's beauty and accomplishments. During her privileged childhood among artists and writers in Connecticut, Alexander Calder's studio was her playroom, and Arthur Miller was a neighbor. The contrast between this golden past and a present marked by frustration, anger, resentment, and fatigue makes the destructive force of Alzheimer's a vivid reality. Anyone assuming that Alzheimer's victims live in a happy, mindless state will discover here that on the contrary they are often agitated, confused, miserable, and angry, and that those who loved the person he or she once was are likely to find themselves pushed to the limits of endurance.

Cooney tells it all with a fine and rare mix of black humor and bleak honesty.

Sports and Exercise Nutrition or The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide

Sports and Exercise Nutrition

Author: William D McArdl

Now in its Second Edition, this text provides a strong foundation in the science of exercise nutrition and bioenergetics and explains how these principles work in the real world of human physical activity and sports competition. This edition has separate, detailed chapters on nutrition recommendations for physically active persons and recommendations geared specifically to those in intense training and sports competition. Case study activities in each chapter involve readers in specific nutritional assessment problems. The book addresses current issues such as low-carbohydrate diets, obesity, various food pyramids, and the special needs of children, the elderly, and pregnant and lactating women.

Julie A. Patten

This book is an historical perspective and a six-component model for a cross-disciplinary field of exercise nutrition. The model is focused on the areas of nutritional enhancement, peak physiologic function, health and longevity, safety, energy balance and body composition, and optimal growth. The authors skillfully present an historical perspective and their ideas for the creation of the field they call exercise nutrition. The book is designed for a one-semester course that logically sequences concepts of exercise physiology, energy metabolism, and nutrition. It is written primarily as an upper division college course text for students who need nutrition content integrated with concepts of exercise physiology and energy metabolism. The authors provide an excellent historical overview linking the fields of nutrition and exercise to bolster their proposed model of a discipline of ""Exercise Nutrition"" that integrates data from chemistry, exercise physiology, nutrition, biochemistry, medicine, and physiology. They adeptly integrate current, research-based exercise and nutrition-related information relevant to physically active individuals. Numerous color figures, tables, and equations are expertly used to illustrate and elucidate text content. The extensive appendix provides current, reliable information and sources to support the content of the text. The authors have a web site to support the text. The authors' effort to integrate exercise and nutrition-related information along with an historical overview of the two disciplines is unique and commendable. There is in-depth, valid information for those desiring an integrated approach to the study of human nutrition and physicalactivity. Regardless of whether a discipline of ""Exercise Nutrition"" is established or not as proposed by the authors, this book demonstrates the successful integration of valid nutrition-related topics and exercise information.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Jude Christopher Sullivan, MS (University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This book is a condensed compilation of centuries of our cumulative understanding of human function in health and disease and the role nutrition assumes in this process. In addition, it strives to endorse an integrated understanding of this body of science and, in turn, promote a positive impact on how one can use this information where it is necessary:ultimately in the care of a practitioner's clients and/or patients. This book is the second edition of a book originally published in 1999.
Purpose: The implied and discussed intent of this book is to skillfully blend many different contributing existing scientific disciplines (e.g. biochemistry, exercise physiology, medicine, etc.). The authors promote their agenda to recognize a new field referred to as "exercise nutrition." It is meticulously prepared in order to describe our basic understanding of the role nutrition has on normal human biology and function, but also strives to describe the many different paths that result in the course of our lives (e.g., aging and resulting osteoporosis) and the decisions we might make to eat and live a certain way (e.g., a healthy athlete vs. one with a disordered eating profile). The authors' efforts are worthwhile and they meet their stated objectives in that they provide the necessary scientific background to augment one's fundamental understanding and then take it one step further by providing very real and necessary practical application points.
Audience: The book is written by pre-eminent experts in the field of nutrition and exercise physiology and it would serve as a useful resource for a diverse group. It provides excellent fundamental information for nutrition, exercise physiology, and normal health required by an undergraduate in virtually any health-related course. Its comprehensive literature review at the end of each chapter serves as an excellent resource to any research scientist. And, there are basic concepts of identification and guidelines that would be useful to a clinical healthcare practitioner.
Features: This is designed to be a "cutting edge" teaching tool, learning tool, and reference resource. It provides such information as the latest Dietary Reference Intakes, normative tables (e.g., standards for overweight and obesity), up-to-date indices for monitoring change in health status (e.g. regional body fat distribution and health risks), as well as expanded chapters addressing the nutritional needs of physically active people and those in sports competition. The authors take steps to build on each previous section in order to develop a logical line of thought that ultimately evolves into practice. Although it is impossible for one to become an expert in a single semester (which is the length of time recommended for completion of this text), it provides a sound template from which a practitioner could work. The additions and modifications to the original publication serve to provide an updated list of resources for reference as well as hands-on ideas and methods to be used for immediate practical application situations. In particular, two companion interactive CD-ROM discs are provided along with technical support. The first disc is a nutritional analysis program which can also be used as a reference of nutrition data as well as a report generator which can be used to assist with client counseling. The second disc is a study guide providing 300 multiple choice and true/false questions along with an annotated answer key. It would be advantageous for the authors to expound on the notion of body composition as a "relatively exact" science. They correctly point out that error does exist with in vivo measurement, but this point is all too frequently glossed over in practice. I would recommend addressing the need for continued validation of currently accepted field modalities (e.g. skinfolds, BIA and Bod Pod) against a multicomponent criterion. The authors make an important point regarding the need for extensive practice in administering such technology. It would also be helpful to emphasize the need to expertly, delicately, and honestly interpret results for an individual such as an obese client on a weight reduction program, or an excessively lean athlete striving to lose additional weight/fat in order to enhance performance. Their use of case studies might be valuable here to provide a basic framework of useful dialogue that could be engaged in by the practitioner.
Assessment: This second edition publication is an improvement over its predecessor. It is a valuable teaching tool for the instructor, learning tool for the student, and information resource for the healthcare provider.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Diana Marta, BSN, RN (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This is a layman's guide to bipolar disorder. Designed as a supplement to medication, this book targets patients and their families in an effort to enhance treatment with self-management techniques.
Purpose: In addition to medication and therapy, the author proposes that self-management is an important tool that can be used by the patient and the family to help recognize the symptoms and help prevent more severe episodes. Any attempt to involve the patient and family in care is a worthy one. This book accomplishes its objectives with this easy-to-read manual.
Audience: This book is designed primarily for patients and family, although anyone in a support or professional role working with affected clients could benefit from this information. The author has done extensive research for the NIMH, including showing that self-management techniques, when combined with medication, improve outcome.
Features: After covering medication and diagnosis of bipolar disorder, the author breaks down self-management into four steps: 1) accepting the diagnosis, 2) becoming an expert on one's moods, 3) educating family and friends, and 4) enlisting support. Recognizing how misunderstood the illness is and how much more resistance to treatment occurs, this book attempts to address both of these issues. I liked the proposed contracts and forms suggested as extra tools and the book's organization.
Assessment: As a layman's tool, I think this is an excellent resource. It breaks down bipolar illness into manageable components, poses questions about each, and then presents practical and realistic solutions that can be used by the patient and family to enhance treatment. My only concern is whether it will be perceived as a replacement for medication rather than as a supplement to it. That certainly is only a minor concern. For the most part, I think this is an excellent addition to a patient or family's reference library.

Library Journal

Hard on the heels of Fuller Torrey and Michael B. Knable's excellent Surviving Manic Depression: A Manual on Bipolar Disorder for Patients, Families and Providers (LJ 1/02) comes another strong title. Both books cover the origins, symptoms, and treatments for bipolar disorder, with emphasis on current medications. The main difference between the two books is that the current title by Miklowitz (psychology, Univ. of Colorado, Boulder) is intended for patients. It spends a good deal of time on issues exclusive to the sufferer how to come to terms with the diagnosis, whom to confide in, and how to recognize one's own mood swings. More concise in its treatment of the issues just mentioned, Torrey and Knable's title is addressed to a more general audience, spends more time reviewing the scientific evidence concerning the origins of the disease, and has a much more useful resource list. On the whole, Surviving Manic Depression would be the first choice for most libraries, with Miklowitz's book recommended for patient education libraries and medium and large public libraries. Since 1972, when her groundbreaking yoga series Lilias, Yoga, and You first aired on PBS, Folan has been teaching yoga in a friendly, down-to-earth style via books, videos, and audio materials. Now 67, "the First Lady of Yoga" has found that her vocation is a powerful tool for making the aging body stronger, healthier, and more graceful. For those baby boomers who find it difficult to perform traditional yoga poses and stretches, Folan has developed a unique three Rs approach (resist, relax, and restretch), which she incorporates into the poses to improve flexibility. This approach is demonstrated in over 200 photos and in clear instructions, benefits, and cautions. Breathing exercises, meditation, relaxation, and partner yoga are also discussed; in a welcome change from more serious yoga books, Folan encourages readers to listen to their own bodies and be creative and have fun. After years of study, travel, and teaching, Folan has much to say about staying present, accepting oneself, and paying attention to the witness within. Atkins Diabetes Revolution: The Groundbreaking Approach to Preventing and Controlling Diabetes

Author: Robert C Atkins

The statistics are staggering. Thirteen million Americans have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes; another 5.2 million don't know that they have it. During the past thirty years the diabetes rate has tripled, and each year about 200,000 people die from complications of the disease. The Centers for Disease Control project that one out of every three children born in the year 2000 will develop the disease. But Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable. Find out how you can avoid becoming a statistic.

As a respected physician and pioneer in the field of complementary medicine, Dr. Robert C. Atkins recognized early on that diabetes and obesity are twin epidemics, and that the way to reverse both is to permanently change the way people eat. Yet much of the mainstream medical establishment continues to advocate the treatment of diabetes with insulin and other drugs, while recommending a diet high in carbohydrates including sugar which raises your blood sugar. What you'll learn from reading Atkins Diabetes Revolution is that rather than correcting your metabolism, such a diet can actually increase your risk of developing diabetes -- and heart disease.

The Atkins Blood Sugar Control Program (ABSCP) helps you identify the metabolic signposts that indicate trouble long before the onset of Type 2 diabetes so you can stop it in its tracks. If you already have the disease, the ABSCP offers you and your physician a strategy for weight management and blood-sugar control, while minimizing your exposure to drugs.

Atkins Diabetes Revolution presents a comprehensive lifestyle program, including diet, exercise, and nutrient supplementation. The book also containsmeal plans, recipes, a fitness routine, and case studies. This groundbreaking book, a fitting tribute to Dr. Atkins, tackles one of the greatest health challenges you and your family may ever face.

Publishers Weekly

Having been marketed to millions as a weight-loss solution, the Atkins diet is now presented as a means of preventing type 2 diabetes, a disease whose rates are skyrocketing, thanks to the prevalence of risk factors such as obesity and high lipid and blood sugar levels. The authors clearly outline their interpretation of the path to diabetes, arguing that carbs cause blood sugar spikes, triggering the release of more insulin-the hormone that regulates blood sugar-than the cells need. Blood sugar ends up stored as fat and the body's cells start responding more slowly to the insulin, which leads to elevated blood sugar levels. But the tone the authors adopt when touting their low-carb, high-protein, high-fat approach may arouse some skepticism and even fear. "In the end, only you can decide what's best for your health," they warn. "You can choose the Atkins approach and improve your health, or you can choose the ADA [American Diabetes Association] approach and descend into more and more medications and poor health." While studies now demonstrate low-carb dieting can lead to weight loss and cholesterol control over the short term, experts tend to agree that diets that demonize one food group aren't easy to stick to over the long haul. Still, the work includes valuable nutritional information and sounds a needed alarm about the diabetes epidemic. (On sale Aug. 3) Forecast: With national TV, radio and print ads, as well as online promotions, this latest Atkins guide should have no trouble climbing bestseller lists. Punk Rock Aerobics or Sound Mind Sound Body

Punk Rock Aerobics: 75 Killer Moves, 50 Punk Classics, and 25 Reasons to Get Off Your Ass and Exercise

Author: Hilken Mancini

Would you flee in terror if confronted with a room full of sweaty people in spandex thongs?

Are you not immune to the occasional Joe Strummer-style air guitar jump?

If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, here at last is your workout book. As simple as throwing on that old Ramones (or even White Stripes) record, punk meets fitness in an exercise craze that is spreading like wildfire amongst teens and aging rockers alike: Punk Rock Aerobics. Though punk and aerobics may seem to be unlikely bedfellows -the love child of Richard Hell and Richard Simmons?-here are two "formerly decrepit, lazy, cigarette-smoking, beer drinking" rockers-turned-certified-aerobics-instructors as enthusiastic about X and Iggy Pop as they are about getting into shape.

Full of easy-to-follow moves in a home-exercise-friendly format, Punk Rock Aerobics is a calorie-burning, DIY workout. Back in the "good old days" cigarettes might have sufficed to keep rockers slim, posit these authors, but to really be able to rock out all night, you need to drop those chips and get off the couch. Peppered throughout to help you stay inspired are Q&A's and photos of rockers on their own workout routines:

  • J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. perfecting the "Face Down Butt Lift."
  • Mary Timony doing the "Jumping Jacked Ups."
  • K Records' Calvin Johnson on the philosophical implications of Ultimate Frisbee.
  • Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore declaring "it's not the poundage so much as the roundage that I have a problem with."
  • Hugo Burnham on the percentage of Jack Daniels (60) that comprised his sweat back in his glory days drumming for Gang of Four.

Also included to help you get rid of the Schlitz gut is a sure-to-be-controversial discography for picking your favorite MP3's, CD's, and LP's. As Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth declares, "Just put on yr favorite punker and "kick out the jams, motherf***er."

Sound Mind, Sound Body: A New Model for Lifelong Health

    Author: Kenneth R Pelletier

Almost 20 years after his bestselling book Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer transformed our understanding of disease prevention and the effects of stress on the immune system, Dr. Kenneth R. Pelletier's latest work, Sound Mind, Sound Body, offers a dramatic new approach to understanding personal health. Lifelong good health, says Dr. Pelletier, is far more dependent on a positive, purposeful life orientation than on aerobic workouts and regimented low-fat diets. This extraordinary revelation is based on a wide body of recent research findings, as well as Dr. Pelletier's own five-year Rockefeller-funded study of 51 prominent men and women who have made major contributions to the world beyond their own personal success and security - including Lindsay Wagner, Norman Lear, and Congresswoman Claudine Schneider. Dr. Pelletier challenges the medical community's long-accepted focus on the "disease model" and proposes a positive new health paradigm. Sound Mind, Sound Body examines the lives of people who are rarely ill, who manage aging successfully, or who cope extremely well with both acute and chronic illness - and describes how they do it. Among Dr. Pelletier's fascinating findings:. People who overcome serious illness or physical trauma in childhood are often actually strengthened - not debilitated - by the experience. People who enjoy a sense of belonging and a real connection with other people generally pass through periods of intense stress and exposure to health hazards and remain untouched by illness. Altruistic work is closely related to the ability to overcome life-threatening crises and disease. There is a healthy way of being ill, which can help a person manage such chronic problems as arthritis and heart disease. Filled with true stories that will both surprise and inspire, Sound Mind Sound Body is a testament to the human capacity for striking a vital balance of a sound mind and a sound body - and for growing and to forcing new challenges with conviction.

    Publishers Weekly

Pelletier ( Mind As Healer, Mind As Slayer ), a senior clinical fellow at the Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention at the Stanford University School of Medicine, focuses much of his attention here on a Rockefeller-funded study he conducted chronicling the lives of 51 notables, among them Norman Lear, David Rockefeller and the late Norman Cousins, who he believes have enjoyed exemplary physical and mental health. The author contends that long-term health depends more on a positive orientation than on aerobic workouts or a special diet, emphasizing that no way of life can guarantee freedom from disease and disability--or can ensure longevity. To understand the meaning of health, he adds, it is necessary to broaden its definition beyond the physical. Optimal health requires an integration of physical, mental, spiritual and environmental well-being; health is an attitude comprising our basic beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. Though not all readers will be deeply interested in the health of the rich and famous, what does stand out is Pelletier's presentation of the extensive research now being undertaken to better understand the mind/body connection and its relationship to health. This updated edition of this book provides an excellent overview of the most important aspects of Parkinson's disease and its treatment. This is the fourth edition, the original having been published in 1978. The authors seek to provide updated information to patients and their families about a condition that has provoked a recent surge in scientific insight and discovery. The authors refer in particular to the recent shift in emphasis from a proposed etiology that is purely environmental to one that allows for genetic factors as well. Although the information is intended for lay readers, the sophistication of the concepts presented make it appropriate for ancillary care personnel (nurses, social workers, nutritionists) involved in the care of these patients as well. The writing style, admirable in that the authors do not talk down to the intended reader, may nonetheless be too advanced for some readers. However, most patients who are concerned enough to search out such a book will likely have the capacity to comprehend it or at least to bring unanswered questions to their treating physician. The few illustrations are of high quality and the text may have benefited from a few more, given the intended audience. A helpful glossary is also included and is quite complete. This is an excellent reference for patients and family members and others who insist on up-to-date information on this complex and rapidly evolving subject.

Children and Teens Afraid to Eat or Am I Thin Enough yet

Children and Teens Afraid to Eat: Helping Youth in Today's Weight-Obsessed World

    Author: Frances M Berg

Documenting the overwhelming physical and mental effects of the pressure to be thin, this book examines the way weight obsession consumes America's youth. It describes four major weight and eating problems-eating disorders, dysfunctional eating, size prejudice, and overweight-and shows healthy ways to change. A valuable resource for parents, teachers, and health professionals, it explains new ways to nurture children and prevent weight problems.

    Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Ryna Levy-Milne, PhD, RDN (University of British Columbia)
Description: This third edition provides a comprehensive overview of six major eating and weight problems affecting youth and guidance on how to resolve these issues.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide facts and research on the plight of today's youth regarding weight issues and practical guidelines on how to make changes in the home and community to resolve these issues.
Audience: The intended audience includes healthcare practitioners, parents, and teachers. The author is a credible expert in the area of disordered eating and weight issues.
Features: The author believes in the "health at any size" paradigm, "a health-centered approach that focuses on health and well-being, not weight." She recommends a healthful "vitality" lifestyle approach that focuses on healthy eating, increased movement, and improving self-esteem. This book is well written and easy to read and is presented in a user-friendly format.
Assessment: Due to the increased prevalence of eating disorders and obesity in our youth, this book is invaluable to all care providers. It not only provides insight into the eating and weight issues that North American youths face but also provides a user-friendly approach in the form of self-help tools, check lists, etc. that is often lacking in the educational system and resources available.

    KLIATT

This is a comprehensive study of dysfunctional eating behavior, an epidemic that is affecting Americans of all ages, without discrimination. Most sufferers have been girls, but today more and more boys feel a need to have a specific body type. The book is not limited to discussions about anorexia and bulimia. There are as well anecdotes about adolescents' (non-) acceptance of themselves no matter what size they are. What can parents and teachers do to encourage self-acceptance in these children? As early as Chapter 1: Growing Up Afraid to Eat, Berg begins her suggestions, and includes a wonderful "Health at any Size" chart that diagrams how school, family, peers, media, and healthcare providers contribute to healthy children of all sizes living actively, eating well, and feeling good about themselves and others. On the preceding page, there is a truly funny paragraph that talks about the 1990s Chicago Bulls and how they all registered as having body masses that would label them "obese." Obviously the Body Mass Index, BMI, is being used improperly. The appendix includes a chart of BMI, notes for each chapter, and an extensive bibliography. The style is eminently readable, not only for parents and health-care professionals, but also for teachers and mature high school students. (402 South 14th St., Hettinger, ND 58639). Am I Thin Enough yet?: The Cult of Thinness and the Commercialization of Identity

    Author: Sharlene Hesse Biber

Whether they are rich or poor, tall or short, liberal or conservative, most young American women have one thing in common--they want to be thin. And they are willing to go to extraordinary lengths to get that way, even to the point of starving themselves. Why are America's women so preoccupied with weight? What has caused record numbers of young women--even before they reach their teenage years--to suffer from anorexia and bulimia? In Am I Thin Enough Yet?, Sharlene Hesse-Biber answers these questions and more, as she goes beyond traditional psychological explanations of eating disorders to level a powerful indictment against the social, political, and economic pressures women face in a weight-obsessed society.
Packed with first-hand, intimate portraits of young women from a wide variety of backgrounds, and drawing on historical accounts and current material culled from both popular and scholarly sources, Am I Thin Enough Yet? offers a provocative new way of understanding why women feel the way they do about their minds and bodies. Specifically, Hesse-Biber highlights the various ways in which American families, schools, popular culture, and the health and fitness industry all undermine young women's self-confidence as they inculcate the notions that thinness is beauty and that a woman's body is more important than her mind. The author builds her case in part by letting her subjects tell their own story, revealing in their own words how current standards of femininity lead many women to engage in eating habits that are not only self-destructive, but often akin to the obsessions and ritualistic behaviors found among members of cults. For instance, we meet Delia, a bulimiccollege senior who makes the startling admission that "my final affirmation of myself is how many guys look at me when I go into a bar." We even learn of six-year-olds like Lauren, already preoccupied with her weight, who considers herself "a real clod" in ballet class because she is not as thin as her peers. We are introduced to women (and men) from different cultures who themselves have acquired eating disorders in pursuit of the American standard of physical perfection. And we learn of the often tragic consequences of this obsession with thinness, as in the case of Janet, who underwent surgery to reduce her weight only to suffer from chronic illness and pain as a result. The book concludes with Hesse-Biber's prescriptions on how women can overcome their low self-image through therapy, spiritualism, and grass-root efforts to empower themselves against a society obsessed with beauty and thinness.
Am I Thin Enough Yet? brings into sharp focus the multitude of societal and psychological forces that compel American women to pursue the ideal of thinness at any cost. It will remain a benchmark work on the subject for many years to come.

    Publishers Weekly

Combining the feel-good vibes of a self-help manual with the self-castigating fervor of a born-again believer's confessional, this seemingly candid spiritual autobiography smacks of bland impersonality despite its stance of ruthless honesty. A psychiatrist and author of Love Is Letting Go of Fear , Jampolsky tells how he learned to go beyond his selfish, manipulative ego and surrender to love and God. A friend's sudden death, his own bitter divorce and drift toward alcoholism, an encounter with Mother Teresa and his work with AIDS patients were milestones on his quest. His familiar message, reinforced through prose poems and prayers, involves listening to one's inner voice, recognizing the holiness in each person, transforming romantic relationships into ``holy relationships'' and letting go of fearful, negative attitudes. During the crisis following the dissolution of his marriage, his life was dramatically changed by a chance exposure to the esoteric New Age teaching know as ``A Course in Miracles.'' Physical Activity and Health is the first textbook to bring together the results of the most important studies in this rapidly changing field and offers a detailed yet concise and clear presentation of key concepts. Written by Claude Bouchard and other leading scientists from around the world, this richly illustrated textbook offers information unmatched in accuracy and reliability. Where other books have simply promoted physical activity for the individual or a population, this book completely integrates and examines the relationship between physical activity and health by

    • providing a history of physical activity, including how levels of physical activity have changed over time and how this has affected the overall health of society;
    • highlighting the differences in the effects of physical activity on fitness across age, gender, and ethnic groups;

    • suggesting new directions for research in this growing and changing field.
The text explains the latest advances in understanding the effects of acute and chronic participation in physical activity and reviews the relationships between regular physical activity and health outcomes, including cardiovascular morbidities, mental health, and all-cause mortality. It also focuses on the prevention of diseases, quality of life, and well-being.

The textbook offers the following features:
    • Chapter outlines that provide a user-friendly, conceptual framework
    • Key concepts, definitions, and study questions that simplify the review process
    • 179 illustrations, 54 tables, and 51 photographs that clarify the text and emphasize key concepts
Physical Activity and Health is organized into five parts. Part I defines the basic concepts, traces the history of the field, and summarizes evidence accumulated on the relationship between levels of physical activity and fitness and variations with age, between genders, and among ethnic groups. Part II describes the latest advances in understanding the effects of acute and chronic participation in physical activity. Part III reviews the relationships between regular physical activity and health outcomes—including cardiovascular morbidities, mental health, and all-cause mortality—and the levels of fitness and the same health outcomes. Part IV focuses on the "how" and deals with dose-response issues and types of exercise programs. Part V explores how advances in genetics challenge our understanding of the complex relationships between physical activity, fitness, and health. It offers a practical integration of all the issues discussed in the preceding chapters.

Some of the finest scientists in the field from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia collaborated on this comprehensive resource. Readers can feel confident that they are receiving the most accurate information currently available on physical activity and health in any textbook.

    * Scientific arguments on the benefits of structured exercise program for individual and public health advancement.

    From the Author
This book is intended to serve as a compendium of those aspects of Weightlifting and Weight-Training that are essential to the development of physical strength. A prominent feature of this book is the in-depth coverage of scientific and medical aspects of a forgotten sport. The idea of writing a book about Weightlifting has haunted me since 1970sÐŽ¦. Yet, the old means of typing, drawing, and statistical analysis were quite discouraging in tackling such task of vast descriptive nature.

Along thirty years, from the birth of the idea to deciding to proceed with writing and publication, many events have enriched my experience about the subject. Among these events was the exposure to men with great experience in international Weightlifting. In addition, I am also grateful to the city of my birth, Alexandria Egypt, for the exposure it offered me to many Olympic gold medallists in Weightlifting. As a seaport, Alexandria has offered me unique exposure to international trends that lacked in the rest of the neighboring towns. I owe deep indebtedness to many teachers and professors who had shaped my academic acumen.

    Birth Without Violence

    Author: M D Leboyer

The classic guide to gentle birth that revolutionized the way we welcome our children into the world.

    • The first book to express what mothers have always known: babies are born complete human beings with the ability to experience a full range of emotions.

    • Shows how gentle lighting, a quiet atmosphere, and a warm bath allow a newborn to ease the transition from womb to world without trauma or fear.

    • New translation overseen by the author himself; also includes a new author preface.

Birth without Violence revolutionized the way we perceive the process of birth, urging us to consider birth from the infant's point of view. Why must a child emerge from the quiet darkness of the womb into a blaze of blinding light and loud voices? Why must an infant take its first breath in terror, hanging upside down as its vulnerable spine is jerked straight? Why must the infant be separated from its mother after spending nine months inside her nourishing body?
Examining alternatives to technocentric approaches to childbirth, this classic text shows us how we can create an environment of tranquillity in which to welcome our children: a relaxed mother, gentle lighting, soothing atmosphere, and a warm bath that mirrors the child's prenatal surroundings. Dr. Leboyer's simple techniques show us how a birth without violence has far-reaching implications for improving the quality of human life physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

    Author: David Kirsch

Lose weight--and keep it off--in a New York minute!

When supermodel Heidi Klum needed to get into tip-top shape for the Victoria's Secret fashion show--just eight weeks after giving birth to her second child--she turned to a miracle worker, celebrity fitness trainer David Kirsch, and his Ultimate New York Diet.

But you don't have to be a celebrity--or a New Yorker--to reap the benefits of this fresh approach to a healthy, fit lifestyle. All you need is the desire to take control of your eating and your body and the willingness to change your life for the better. Once you take that first step to a new, improved you, there's no limit to how fabulous you can look and feel!

The Ultimate New York Diet provides the tools to slim down safely in record time:

    • A diet that's broken into three phases over the course of eight weeks, so you can see results fast and be inspired to stay on track

    • 64 quick, easy-to-prepare recipes for healthy, satisfying meals

David Kirsch, author of the wildly popular The Ultimate New York Body Plan, has written this book for the needs of people with busy, multitasking lives--people who want to be on top of their game when it comes to their careers and their bodies. This is not just a diet; it's a life transformation. After completing The Ultimate New York Diet, your attitude toward food, exercise, and wellness will be forever changed and you'llfinally have the key to a fit and fabulous body.

David Kirsch is the founder and owner of the Madison Square Club, celebrated for custom-designed fitness training and nutritional counseling. Visit his website at davidkirsch.com.

    Library Journal

In this follow-up to The Ultimate New York Body Plan, fitness trainer and wellness coach Kirsch presents a longer-term diet and exercise plan designed for rapid initial weight loss and subsequent permanent weight control. Whereas the first book boiled down to a two-week crash diet for special events, this one allows readers eight weeks to shed pounds. The rules are basically the same: readers must restrict carbohydrate and alcohol consumption, eat healthy proteins and vegetables, and exercise frequently. Kirsch's regimen has been highly popular and successful among his celebrity clientele, whose weight-loss stories fill many pages. His clearly explained approach seeks to address holistically nutritional, physical, and emotional obstacles to long-term weight loss and includes detailed meal plans, healthy recipes, and an illustrated exercise plan. The only negative aspects are the author's questionable decision to recommend unproven hoodia supplements, frequent plugs of his own brand of weight-loss products, and overly restrictive daily calorie allowances of some of his meal plans. This otherwise intelligent and useful nutritional and fitness book is best suited for larger public libraries.-Ingrid Levin, Florida Atlantic Univ. The Real Deal Guide to Pregnancy or New Detox Diet

The Real Deal Guide to Pregnancy

    Author: Erika Lenkert

An alternative to the now 10-year-old Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy, this upbeat and cleverly written resource is packed with must-have information and couched in everyday practicality for the newly pregnant woman. The Real Deal Guide to Pregnancy opens with quick answers to the most-asked questions ("Can I still have my hair highlighted?" "Is it true that hot tubs are off limits?" "What about the champagne I guzzled last week?") and moves into a unique organization of chapters by topic rather than trimester. Each chapter opens with the author's own true-life anecdote, and then eases into clearly laid-out, hardworking information, with tip and fact boxes scattered throughout. The author interviewed 115 moms across the world, of all ages, and includes their experiences herein as well, for the most well-rounded information available on the market today. Finally, the book has been vetted by a professional OB/GYN to ensure the medical know-how is up-to-date and safe. Not only is this book for the four million women that have a baby each year in the United States, but for friends who will buy it for their pregnant friends, and first-time moms looking for quick answers.

    Publishers Weekly

Unsatisfied with the pregnancy books out there, Lenkert (The Last Minute Party Girl) decided to write her own. Light, humorous and accessible, Lenkert's guide offers facts on important topics like nutrition, exercise and doctor's appointments, and also includes her own thoughts and experiences concerning everything from maternity fashion, coping with moodiness, and her relationship with her husband during her pregnancy. Lenkert's writing style-along with her Cheat Sheets on essential vitamins needed in each trimester and lists of healthy snacks for pregnancy hunger pains-make this guide fun and accessible. Quotes from more than 100 pregnant women and moms, whom Lenkert calls the Mommy Menagerie appear throughout the book and shed light on pregnancy cravings, sleep and nausea to name a few. Lenkert utilizes her fashion savvy by including her favorite Web sites for baby clothing, furniture and gear, and also includes helpful and practical lists of what to bring to the hospital with you and newborn essentials for when you arrive home. When Vicki Iovine's The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancywas published in 1995, it stood out to a lot of pregnant women as a fresh and practical resource more readable than many other pregnancy manuals available at the time, equivalent to girlfriends dishing about pregnancy over decaffeinated coffee. Now there are many such titles on the market, and new mom and lifestyle writer Lenkert's is another to add to the list. Highly readable, the book is organized by topic rather than trimester, with chapters including answers to some basic pregnancy questions and input from what Lenkert calls her "Mommy Menagerie"-more than 100 mothers of all ages from around the world. But its real strength is in Lenkert's sharing of her own experiences: she tells all about her pregnancy, her partner, and her daughter, with no detail too personal. This is not the only pregnancy book a library should own, but as a fun and informative update to The Girlfriends' Guide, it should be considered. [A full-color flexi-format paperback.-Ed.]

Dr. Orloff's guide will show you how to recapture, nurture, and affirm your intuitive ability, so that you can utilize it to help heal yourself. Intuition plays an indispensable role in self-diagnosis, pain control, immune response, and recovery from acute and chronic illness; it can lead you to breakthroughs in anxiety, panic, depression, and other emotional blockages, even when traditional psychotherapy has failed. Intuition also offers insights into the use of medications and the selection of the right healer for your needs. Further, it is integral for sexual healing, since sexuality is a potent connector and energy source for clarifying spirituality and improving vitality.

    Internet Bookwatch

In Dr. Judith Orloff's Guide To Intuitive Healing: Five Steps To Physical, Emotional, And Sexual Wellness, Dr. Judith Orloff (Board-certified psychiatrist and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA) integrates intuition and classical forms of Western medicine. Natural Therapies for Emphysema and COPD or Allergy Cooking with Ease

Natural Therapies for Emphysema and COPD: Relief and Healing for Chronic Pulmonary Disorders

    Author: Robert J Green Jr N D

    ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE / HEALTH

“An important addition to the growing body of literature on natural medicine, Natural Therapies for Emphysema and COPD provides a much needed and in-depth approach to natural therapies for chronic respiratory disorders. Highly recommended.”
--James Strohecker, CEO of HealthWorld Online and executive editor of Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide

“Robert Green Jr.’s book on emphysema and COPD is a landmark work. I recommend it as a reference book for all COPD patients, families, professionals, and anyone else seeking self-care tools and other alternatives to complement conventional COPD treatment.”
--Vijai Sharma, Ph.D., director of the Behavioral Medicine Center in Cleveland, Tennessee

Approximately 35 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with some form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with emphysema afflicting 18 million of that group. Worldwide, as many as 293 million people suffer with these conditions. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in America, claiming nearly 120,000 lives annually. Yet conventional approaches to treatment, with their regimens of drugs and unceasing physical therapy, provide neither cure nor significant relief.

In Natural Therapies for Emphysema and COPD, Robert Green shows that alternative holistic therapies ranging from herbs to homeopathy offer great promise in relieving COPD’s debilitating symptoms. Starting with the basics of the physiology of respiration, Green presents a comprehensive program that includes detoxification, dietary changes, nutritional supplements, and herbal medicine; breathing techniques and exercise options such as aerobics, yoga, qigong, and tai chi; and alternative therapies such as homeopathy, acupuncture, and massage--noting how and why each therapy works. He also details how to stop smoking, includes suggestions for how to find alternative health practitioners, and provides sources for the alternative products recommended.

He has used nutritional and natural approaches to address emphysema and COPD since 1994. He lives in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Allergy Cooking with Ease: The No Wheat, Milk, Eggs, Corn, and Soy Cookbook

    Author: Nicolette M Dumk

Over 200 family-tested recipes designed to meet many types of dietary needs.

    Library Journal

This book asks and answers the questions, ``How, then, can we live?'' Not only do folks with multiple allergies have to avoid completely many common foods that are the basis of our national diet, they also must rotate other foods or food families, eating them just once or twice a week. Dumke provides recipes for a variety of foods, including desserts, ice cream, pizza, and other popular delights that allergy patients must give up. Many of the recipes, such as the ones for no-yeast bread, pizza crust, and teething biscuits, offer variations based on alternate flours. The book is enhanced by several indexes and tables. Food-family tables for all common plant and animal foods are indexed; there is a complete allergen avoidance index; an index to recipes by grains and alternatives; and a general index. This is a valuable addition to cookery collections and health collections and a helpful reference tool as well.-- Carol Cubberly, Univ. of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg

Doctor Yourself or Wood Becomes Water

Doctor Yourself: Natural Healing That Works

    Author: Andrew W Saul

Don't bother looking in the history books for what has killed the most Americans. Look instead at your dinner table. We eat too much of the wrong things and not enough of the right things. Scientific research continually indicates nationwide vitamin and mineral deficiencies in our country, and we spend over a trillion dollars each year on disease care. Is it any surprise that doctors consistently place among the very highest incomes? Andrew Saul has seen enough of this situation, and in Doctor Yourself, he gives you the power you need to change it. Citing numerous scientific evidence, as well as case studies from his decades of practice, Dr. Saul explodes the myth that an army of medical specialists and pharmaceutical drugs are necessary to maintain our health. The human body evolved to live well and fight off disease on a supply of only a dozen or so essential nutrients. Unfortunately, modern meat-laden, high-sugar diets provide catastrophically inadequate levels of those nutrients. Using the guidelines and protocols for diet and vitamin megadosing laid out in Doctor Yourself, you can not only prevent disease from getting a foothold in the first place, but can also cure yourself of illnesses already in progress without resorting to drugs or surgery.

The most comprehensive guide to nutritional therapy ever published, Doctor Yourself provides proven methods for combating almost every possible health condition -- from asthma and Alzheimer's disease to cancer, depression, heart disease, and more -- all presented in Dr. Saul's unforgettable style. Whether he's delivering commonsense tips on subjects such as weight loss and longevity, praising the healthy glow of a carotene tan, or discussing with his children the merits of eating the aphids in their organic broccoli, Dr. Saul takes the starch out of healthcare and makes taking charge of your family's health an experience both valuable and fun.

Each chapter includes: -Lists of common ailments associated with each element -Feng shui solutions for the home and workplace -Acupuncture treatment -Dietary therapy -Qigong exercises

    Kenneth S. Cohen
Gail Reichstein's creative insight and engaging style makes a very old theory very new. By applying the Chinese Five Element Theory to health of body and health of home she reveals a level of wisdom relevant to people of any culture. Harry Tiebout or Living in the Labyrinth

    Harry Tiebout: The Collected Writings

    Author: Harry Tiebout

One of the first psychiatrists to describe alcoholism as a disease rather than a moral failing or criminal activity, Harry M. Tiebout was also one of the first to wholeheartedly endorse Alcoholics Anonymous as an effective force in the struggle against compulsive drinking. This volume brings together, for the first time, some of Tiebout's most influential writings. Many of these pieces—from explorations of the therapeutic approach to alcoholism to instructive discussions of the act of surrender so crucial to recovery—are seminal documents in the history, treatment, and understanding of alcoholism. Together, they represent the significant contribution of one man to the countless lives shaken by alcoholism and steadied with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous, psychiatric intervention, and the foresight and commitment of doctors like Harry Tiebout.

Living in the Labyrinth: A Personal Journey through the Maze of Alzheimer's

    Author: Diana Friel McGowin

Living In The Labyrinth is the story of how one woman found the strength and the courage to cope with a devastating disease that has afflicted five million Americans. Far from being an exercise in self-pity or a standard autobiography, this is an unflinching and ultimately uplifting look at a debilitating illness from the inside out.

    Publishers Weekly

The last person one might expect to write a book about Alzheimer's disease is somebody sick with it. And yet McGowin, a middle-aged legal assistant living in Florida, here describes the slipping away of her life: she became confused easily, couldn't remember how to do her job, had to ``retire early,'' and didn't even know what was causing all of this disorientation. Unfortunately, she didn't have the most supportive of husbands, and was too embarrassed to confide in her children. Several physicians she consulted ``pooh-poohed'' her deteriorating condition with the all-too-familiar ``see a psychiatrist'' routine. Finally, after extensive medical and psychological testing, a doctor made the definitive diagnosis--early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Make no mistake: this wrenching account is neither a ``pity me'' look at Alzheimer's nor a standard autobiography. Instead, it is the story of how a woman took charge of her life under difficult circumstances. Friel tells how she relearned everyday tasks most often taken for granted. She also shows how habits and relationships had to change to meet new needs and challenges. She includes appendices of warning symptoms and national organizations that may be of help to Alzheimer's sufferers and their families. (Jan.)
