From the Author
This book is intended to serve as a compendium of those aspects of Weightlifting and Weight-Training that are essential to the development of physical strength. A prominent feature of this book is the in-depth coverage of scientific and medical aspects of a forgotten sport. The idea of writing a book about Weightlifting has haunted me since 1970sЎ¦. Yet, the old means of typing, drawing, and statistical analysis were quite discouraging in tackling such task of vast descriptive nature.

Along thirty years, from the birth of the idea to deciding to proceed with writing and publication, many events have enriched my experience about the subject. Among these events was the exposure to men with great experience in international Weightlifting. In addition, I am also grateful to the city of my birth, Alexandria Egypt, for the exposure it offered me to many Olympic gold medallists in Weightlifting. As a seaport, Alexandria has offered me unique exposure to international trends that lacked in the rest of the neighboring towns. I owe deep indebtedness to many teachers and professors who had shaped my academic acumen.

(2) Practiced Weightlifting at the age of 14 and competed in college and state contests in the 90 kg class.

(3) Studied engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Alexandria, Egypt (1969-1974) and graduated with B.Sc. in Engineering.

(4) Joined the Faculty of Medicine, University of Alexandria in 1975 and graduated in 1981, with M.B. and Ch.B. (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). After two years of internship, I obtained my medical license and practiced as a rural physician, in Damanhour, province of Al-Behira, Egypt.

(5) In 1977, I conducted research as a lecturer in the High Institute of Public Health in Alexandria in a conjoint project with the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the hazards of radioactive radon gas in the phosphate mines of South Egypt.

(6) Overlapping with my undergraduate medical education, I studied for master and doctoral degrees in engineering and obtained my M.Sc. in 1978 and Ph.D. in 1983. My doctorate thesis in engineering was on the 'feasibility of laser-driven fusion'. A synopsis of the thesis was published in the Journal of Optical Society of America, in 1985.

(7) In 1986 and 1987, I was awarded a postdoctoral research associateship by the National Research Council of U.S. and conducted research in the Frank. J. Seiler at the U.S. Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
