New interesting book: Selling the Right Way or Information Technology

Parkinson's Disease: A Guide for Patient and Family

Author: Roger C Duvoisin

The most popular and widely acclaimed guide for parkinsonian patients and their families is now in its thoroughly updated Fifth Edition. In layperson's terms, Drs. Duvoisin and Sage explain the pathology, symptoms, and course of Parkinson's Disease, discuss current drug therapies and surgical procedures, and examine the latest research on the genetics of parkinsonism. This edition features completely rewritten chapters on genetics and on surgery for Parkinson's Disease. New drugs and improvements in levodopa therapy are described, and a new chapter addresses the question of whether levodopa affects disease progression. An appendix lists the trade names, generic names, and formulations of commonly prescribed drugs.

Melanie M. Brandabur

This updated edition of this book provides an excellent overview of the most important aspects of Parkinson's disease and its treatment. This is the fourth edition, the original having been published in 1978. The authors seek to provide updated information to patients and their families about a condition that has provoked a recent surge in scientific insight and discovery. The authors refer in particular to the recent shift in emphasis from a proposed etiology that is purely environmental to one that allows for genetic factors as well. Although the information is intended for lay readers, the sophistication of the concepts presented make it appropriate for ancillary care personnel (nurses, social workers, nutritionists) involved in the care of these patients as well. The writing style, admirable in that the authors do not talk down to the intended reader, may nonetheless be too advanced for some readers. However, most patients who are concerned enough to search out such a book will likely have the capacity to comprehend it or at least to bring unanswered questions to their treating physician. The few illustrations are of high quality and the text may have benefited from a few more, given the intended audience. A helpful glossary is also included and is quite complete. This is an excellent reference for patients and family members and others who insist on up-to-date information on this complex and rapidly evolving subject.
