In this follow-up to The Ultimate New York Body Plan, fitness trainer and wellness coach Kirsch presents a longer-term diet and exercise plan designed for rapid initial weight loss and subsequent permanent weight control. Whereas the first book boiled down to a two-week crash diet for special events, this one allows readers eight weeks to shed pounds. The rules are basically the same: readers must restrict carbohydrate and alcohol consumption, eat healthy proteins and vegetables, and exercise frequently. Kirsch's regimen has been highly popular and successful among his celebrity clientele, whose weight-loss stories fill many pages. His clearly explained approach seeks to address holistically nutritional, physical, and emotional obstacles to long-term weight loss and includes detailed meal plans, healthy recipes, and an illustrated exercise plan. The only negative aspects are the author's questionable decision to recommend unproven hoodia supplements, frequent plugs of his own brand of weight-loss products, and overly restrictive daily calorie allowances of some of his meal plans. This otherwise intelligent and useful nutritional and fitness book is best suited for larger public libraries.-Ingrid Levin, Florida Atlantic Univ.
